Project on Mediterranean Temporary Ponds inaugurates Interpretation Centre

On 21 May 2018, in Vila Nova de Milfontes (Alentejo, Portugal), the Interpretation Center of Mediterranean Temporary Ponds of on the Southwest Coast of Portugal was inaugurated.

LIFE Charcos
This is an initiative of the project "LIFE Charcos", coordinated by the League for the Protection of Nature, na environmental NGO, in partnership with the University of Évora, University of Algarve, the Odemira Municipality and Association of Mira irrigation structure Beneficiaries. The project is co-financed by the European Commission's LIFE program.

Mediterranean Temporary Ponds are one of the most remarkable and unique freshwater habitats in Europe and are considered a priority habitat by Annex I of the Habitats Directive. The species that occur in them are very specific and adapted to the alternation of conditions between flooded and dry soils. Some are endemic with a very small distribution area.

Among other factors, agricultural and livestock use, including the creation of pastures for animals, leads to this type of habitats being very threatened. Some of the project's actions address the compatibility of the conservation of this habitat with agricultural and livestock use, such as the promotion of extensive grazing and the creation of ecological corridors between the ponds.
