New Association "Biodiversity in the Food Industry" in 2021

In spring 2021, the association "Biodiversity in the Food Industry" will be founded in Germany. An initiative group consisting of representatives of standards, food companies, associations, NGOs and scientific institutions prepared this initiative in the past two years. Among them some of the largest food retailers and processors in Europe.

The official launch and foundation of the association "Biodiversity in the Food Industry" is planned for the beginning of March 2021. Companies and organisations with operations in Germany interested in becoming members can contact the Global Nature Fund.

The overarching goal of the initiative is to anchor the protection of biodiversity as a key concern of the food industry and agriculture as a supplier of raw materials.

Members contribute to biodiversity conservation by taking concrete actions. These include, for example:

  • Consideration and continuous development of a basic set of biodiversity criteria in the food industry. Members commit to implementing this basic set in pilot projects for raw materials with high risks for biodiversity within three years.

  • Conduct training for employees, farmers, agricultural advisors and auditors in the food industry.

  • Implementation of a monitoring system to develop the potential for biodiversity on farms.

  • Raise awareness among consumers in Germany about the value of biodiversity for food production.
