The Union of Ethical Biotrade is partner of the LIFE Food&Biodiversity Project since 2016. In this close collaborations, Global Nature Fund and UEBT were continuously in contact on how biodiversity can be further manifested in food standards. Exchanging recommendations and taking part in the standard revision process, we are happy to announce the new UEBT Standard.

What is new in the standard?

The new UEBT standard comprises:
  • Better defined practices and detailed guidance for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use, with an increased focus on regeneration of biodiversity.
  • A more outcome-based approach, emphasising monitoring of actions taken, assessing results and implementing improvements.
  • More guidance on cost calculation so that fairer prices are paid to farmers and wild collectors.
  • Better alignment with legal and policy developments related to access and benefit sharing (ABS) and the Nagoya Protocol.
  • Further alignment with United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and International Labour Organisation conventions.
  • A continuous improvement (stepwise) approach, with some actions that can be prioritized in future stages.

Timeframe

  • There will be a 12-month transition process to the new standard for UEBT members and we aim to make the transition as smooth as possible.
  • The UEBT-Rainforest Alliance herbs and spices checklists, based on the revised UEBT standard, will be published in January 2021, and there will be a 12 -month transition period process as well.
