IPBES discusses on business and biodiversity assessment

The new work programme of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) includes a methodological assessment of the impact and dependence of business on biodiversity and nature´s contributions to people.

The assessment would be aimed at categorizing how business depend on, and impact, biodiversity and nature´s contributions to people and identifying criteria and indicators for measuring that dependence and impact, taking into consideration how such metrics can be integrated into other aspects of sustainability.

The first step in the production of this assessment, as for all IPBES assessments, consists in defining the scope of the assessment, including the overall framework, set of chapters, and their brief content, and a timeline and budget for its production. This is expected to be done at a "scoping meeting" in 2021.
call for nominations of experts to assist with the scoping is expected to be issued in September/October 2020.

The "scoping report" produced at the scoping meeting is expected to be made available for peer review in mid-2021.

The final scoping report will be considered by the Plenary at IPBES 9 (tentatively planned for 2022).

An online conference to provide governments and stakeholders with the opportunity to provide early input to the scoping process is planned to be held from 25-27 November 2020.
