The workshop was attended by 13 representatives of the agriculture and food sectors in Portugal. It aimed at identifying (1) the best strategy to better articulate the positions of the sector regarding the theme of biodiversity and climate change, (2) the ideal approach for the sector: self-regulation or State action, and (3) which tools are most appropriate in the context of the chosen approach. The main conclusions stress the need to: leverage existing institutional structures for a scientifically based common message from the biodiversity sector; avoid the proliferation of standards and certifications and enhance market mechanisms to improve the biodiversity performance of the industry; develop technologies and increase monitoring for a better understanding of the biodiversity situation at farm level.
