After YouTube campaign: Foundation plants 20 million trees

#TeamTrees around Youtuber MrBeast commissions Arbor Day Foundation with gigantic reforestation project

They’re tremendous numbers: When US YouTube star MrBeast’s channel hit the mark of 20 million subscribers, the online community challenged him: plant a tree for each subscriber to make a statement against climate change. And MrBeast (in real life Jimmy Donaldson) delivered: Less than two months after the launch of the #TeamTrees campaign, which Donaldson started together with former NASA scientist Mark Rober, the sum of 20 million dollars was raised on December 19th last year. In the meantime, the total has grown to 21.5 million, which, according to the organizers, comes from 500,000 donors from 200 countries. Among them are major donors such as Tesla boss Elon Musk or YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, but the initiative crossed the finish line with hundreds of thousands of small amounts – the most common donation being 5 dollars. Since January 2020 Arbor Day Foundation is using the money to fuel reforestation projects on all continents except Antarctica: In California, which was ravaged by forest fires, as well as in Kenya, India, Australia, Haiti, and Nepal. The campaign has a significant effect: According to an U.S. Forest Service analysis planting 20 million trees will absorb 1.6 million tons of carbon – as if 1.24 million cars were taken off the road for a year.
