Biodiversity in the Focus: 5000 experts joined at GLF Digital Conference

The Global Nature Fund presented the LIFE Food & Biodiversity project at this year’s largest online-conference on Biodiversity.

The Global Landscape Forum (GLF) Biodiversity Digital Conference: One World – One Health, took place on 28-29th of October and gathered 5000 people from 148 different countries.
Contributing to the session "The role of diverse agricultural landscapes in biodiversity conservation and food system resilience" on 29th October 2020 almost 1000 people followed the presentation of Tobias Ludes, GNF Project manager,  about how the private food sector can take their share in protecting biodiversity in agricultural production. Tobias stressed the importance of integrating effective criteria on biodiversity into standards requirements and corporate sourcing guidelines. 39 companies, standards and cooperatives have already improved their schemes with the support of the LIFE Food & Biodiversity Team, their efforts being based on the recommendations for effective biodiversity criteria given in the LIFE Food & Biodiversity Project.
In the centre of these developments are Biodiversity Action Plans, which are introduced by food companies and food standards globally. Biodiversity action plans structure the management of biodiversity on farm-level and thus are a vital instrument for its management. For more information on how such plans may support your companies endeavour in protection biodiversity, please contact Tobias Ludes (ludes@globalnature.org)

Hosted by World Agroforestry (ICRAF), the session highlighted the need for recognition of the contributions of mixed, diverse agricultural/agrarian landscapes – not only to biodiversity conservation, but also to the development of more resilient food systems to respond to challenges like the actual COVID-19 pandemic. Following up on the session and providing further support for its message, World Agroforestry (ICRAF), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) produced a white paper highlighting the importance of diverse agricultural landscapes, which you can access here.
