Volkswagen AG

Description

The Volkswagen Group with its headquarters in Wolfsburg is one of the world’s leading automobile manufacturers and the largest carmaker in Europe.

The Group is made up of nine brands from seven European countries: Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, Škoda, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini and Scania.

Each brand has its own character and operates as an independent entity on the market. The product range extends from low-consumption small cars to luxury class vehicles. In the commercial vehicle sector, the product offering spans pick ups, busses and heavy trucks.

The Group operates 61 production plants in fifteen European countries and a further six countries in the Americas, Asia and Africa. Around the world, nearly 370,000 employees produce about 26,000 vehicles or are involved in vehicle-related services each working day. The Volkswagen Group sells its vehicles in more than 153 countries.

It is the goal of the Group to offer attractive, safe and environmentally sound vehicles which are competitive on an increasingly tough market and which set world standards in their respective classes.

Sustainability

For us, as a good corporate citizen, social involvement constitutes a key element of our entrepreneurial activities. The same maxims apply at all Volkswagen Group locations worldwide: we support social development, culture and education. At its facilities the Group is involved in the development of regional infrastructure and research, setting up projects in the fields of health promotion, sports and nature conservation.

Our responsibility does not end at the factory gates. We are committed to improving the living conditions of people at our locations beyond the minimum statutory requirements. The Volkswagen Group has a long tradition of looking after the interests of the regions in which our production facilities are located. As part of our corporate culture, this has also been a major factor in enabling us to recruit qualified and motivated personnel for our company.

The Volkswagen Group’s production plants around the world mark the focal point of our effects on biodiversity. Considering our supply chain, these effects increase.

Hence, our Corporate Sustainability Reporting adheres to the requirements of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), including the Automotive Sector Supplement. GRI has approved our efforts in awarding our reporting with Application Level A+.

Furthermore, Volkswagen has begun to integrate the topic of biodiversity in its Environmental Management System with creating new indicators, instruments, processes and responsibilities. In a first step, we collected and analysed data from all our plants (e.g. effects on biodiversity, compensatory measures like reforestation and projects to protect biodiversity) to achieve a systemisation of data and start reflection about biodiversity in our plants.

In our opinion, mobility is not also crucial for humans but also for the conservation of species. Volkswagen, as a responsible automobile manufacturer, supports the re-linking of landscapes which were dissected by transport routes in order to create urgently necessary living environment for migratory animals. Beyond that, we have a long-term partnership with the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union of Germany (NABU), Germany’s biggest nature protection alliance. Within the framework of this cooperation, among others, we work together in projects of wolves’ protection which return after decades of extinction.

The conservation of biodiversity also claims the reduction of climate relevant emissions. Hence, the Volkswagen Group pushes on the development of efficient technologies and innovative vehicle concepts. Simultaneously, we initiate projects for economical and environmentally friendly driving.
