Wind Power and Biodiversity Workshop: Tools to measure, avoid and compensate impacts

29 June 2012, Museu da Electricidade, Avenida de Brasília, 1300 Lisboa, Portugal

Wind power has become a major energy source in the last years and will expand immensely in the next years. The rise of wind power has from the beginning been accompanied with environmental concerns. The findings are however not always without ambiguity and most negative impacts can already be avoided in the planning stages.

Following the mitigation hierarchy the workshop will focus on practical tools and case studies. Starting with instruments to measure actual impacts on flora and fauna in a cost-effective way the speakers will then highlight ways to avoid and minimize effects ranging from choosing the right location to conducting a proper environmental impact assessment. Lastly, to tackle the unavoidable impacts compensation and offset measures will be examined.

Wind park operators, landscape planners and consultants are invited to share their experience and discuss where the different tools are still in need of improvement and how the environmental aspects can be measured properly and be taken into account most effectively.
