Biodiversity standards in the food industry

The food industry and the food trade have a significant impact on biodiversity. However currently the protection of biodiversity dosen't play a role in companies.

The aim of the project is to anchor the conservation of biodiversity and its components in standards and quality seals of the food industry. Basis for the development of the criteria is an analysis of the initial situation (significant effects on biodiversity, current criteria of standards / labels and deficits). With the participation of relevant stakeholders, concrete criteria for the protection of biodiversity will be developed and standard and label organizations, as well as companies with own labels, could be motivated to integrate these criteria. The criteria also serve as a basis for demands, which the companies can adress to the raw material suppliers and other suppliers. This project is not about the development of a stand-alone biodiversity label, but it should incorporate criteria into existing quality systems and sustainability standards.
All companies of the food industry in Germany are addressed to include this supplier specifications.
