The Nature of Ecosystem Service Risks for Business

This new KPMG / UNEP FI / FFI publication shows how prepared different private sectors are to hedge against their impacts and dependency on ecosystem services. The study shows businesses a number of ways to move forward on this issue and provides examples of companies that take action to turn risk into opportunities.

The authors seek to identify the types of risks companies are exposed to and examine the corporate response based on a range of corporate management benchmarking studies.

The analysis showed the following sectors run a high risk, either in terms of their impact or dependence on biodiversity and ecosystem services (BES) or the level of maturity of their management of the issue: food & beverages, oil & gas, and the mining sector. Also banks should take notice of their exposure to BES risks.
