Environmental impacts of palmoil and potential substitutes

A study by WWF shows that replacing palmoil with other plant based oils won't save the environment. Researchers found that sunflower oil, rapeseed oil, soybean oil and coconut oil will even more affect global warming and loss of biodiversity.

In a recent published study about environmental impacts of palmoil, WWF compared palmoil to different crop based oils. Results show that simply replacing palmoil with sunflower oil, rapeseed oil, soybean oil or coconut oil will not solve the ecological problems accompanied by palmoil plantations. An entire substitution of all palmoil plantations with thos alternative plant oils would increase demand for agriculturally used land by 1.4 mio. hectares. The increased demand impacts biodiversity loss and global warming. As a solution WWF suggests better conditions for cultivation, a reduction in demand for palmoil and the use of goods that fulfill social and ecological criteria.
