Brazilian Business and Biodiversity Initiative
Following the context of the Global Platform on Business and Biodiversity launch and motivated by the work developed by initiatives that have managed to promote an interaction with the private sector and the international agenda on biodiversity in different countries, the Brazilian Council of Sustainable Development (CEBDS), The Confederation of Industries – Brazil (CNI) and the Business Movement for Biodiversity in Brazil (MEBB), supported by LIFE Institute, have founded the Brazilian Initiative on Business and Biodiversity.
The first goal of the CBD is to promote the conservation of the biological diversity of ecosystems, habitats and biomes.
Rio de Janeiro, 30. July 2012: The Executive Secretariat of the Initiative will be rotational using the Conference of Parties as a reference. CNI will host the first Executive Secretariat of the Brazilian Initiative.
The Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity have for some time been exploring ways to enhance private-sector collaboration in achieving the goals of the CBD. COP8 (Curitiba, 2008) mentioned for the first time in its decisions the imminent need of business sector involvement for the sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity. Since then, this trend has somewhat grown culminating with COP 10 decisions.
Amongst other elements, the decision called upon the Secretariat of CBD to encourage the establishment of national and regional business and biodiversity initiatives by facilitating a forum of dialogue among Parties, business and other stakeholders on the global level.
As a part of the process, CBD launched at the end of 2011 the Global Platform on Business and Biodiversity which should take vital part in disseminating information between the numerous initiatives worldwide, facilitating the dialogue among stakeholders and introducing new tools that can help the business sector in the process of inserting biodiversity in their management strategies, among other benefits. SCBD has been helping in the creation of B&B initiatives in a number of countries and offering opportunities to the initiatives to interact on a positive way.
