The enterprises that have joined forces under the guidance of the ‘Biodiversity in Good Company’ Initiative advocate for the protection and sustainable use of biodiversity in partnership with other political and societal stakeholders. The Initiative members are small-, medium-, and large-scale member companies from various sectors located in Brazil, Germany and Japan.
The Business and Biodiversity Initiative ‘Biodiversity in Good Company' was founded under the auspices of the German presidency of the 9th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in May 2008. It is targeted at promoting business engagement for the protection of biological diversity. The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety launched the international Initiative and commissioned the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) with its implementation.
The member companies support the economy's voluntary commitment to protecting biodiversity and aim to create space for innovation and investment in order to pave the way for ecologically sound technologies, products and services to be successfully introduced into the marketplace. They are ready to share the benefits of the economic utilization of natural resources fairly with those who grant access to them openly and cooperatively.
‘Biodiversity in Good Company' contributes to increasingly integrating the private sector into the implementation process of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

In order to increase awareness about the common responsibility to catalyze ecologically sound solutions and foster environmental alliances, members of the Initiative cultivate and engage in an open dialogue between business, politics, science, non-governmental organizations and society on a national as well as international level. More than 20 member companies have signed the Initiative's Leadership Declaration by now.
